JFA ( Jodie Foster's Army ) is an American hardcore and skate punk band that was formed in the state of Arizona in 1981. In the course of the band's history, all band members moved to the south of the state of California, because there they have more contact with the skate scene in the USA. In addition to the band, singer Brian Brannon owns his own skateboard company, the JFA Boards by Factory 13 "-" JFA-Skateboards "for short. This makes JFA the only band that has its own skateboard company. The founding members are Brian Brannon (vocals ), Don Redono (guitar), Michael Cornelius (bass) and Mike "Bam-Bam" Sversvold (drums).
history
JFA was founded around March 1981. All members knew each other from common skateboarding, which is still the focus of the music today. After a concert by the band DOA , Brannon, Cornelius, Redono and Sversvold decided to make their own music. Brannon stated that the band name should symbolize the counterpart to "Attempted assassination of Ronald Regan". The band's first appearance took place during a Black Flag show, where JFA played their first single Pipetruck at the opening . In late 1981 the band recorded their first EP Blatant Localism . The EP was recorded by Placebo Records, which produced most of the bands' albums. In 1983 the first album by JFA Valley of the Yakes followed . In 1984 bassist Michael Cornelius left the band during a nine-week tour. His replacement was Alan Bishop of Sun City Girls. During the 1980s the band worked with the legendary Thrasher Magazine. In the following years Sversvold also left the band. When and for what reasons is not known. His replacement was Carter Blitch. Bishop also left the band. In the following years, various musicians took over the bass or drums in the band. The current line-up consists of Brian Brannon (vocals), Don Redondo (guitar), Corey Stretz (bass) and Carter Blitch (drums).
JFA skateboards
Brannon has had his own skateboard company for several years, which to this day only produces decks in the form known colloquially as "fishboard". This shape was typical of skateboards of the 1970s and 1980s, and is not symmetrical like today's skateboards. The so-called "nose" (curvature on the front edge of the deck) is only minimal or nonexistent on these boards. The "kicktail" (curvature at the rear edge) is flatter on the fishboards than on today's decks. The graphics vary between the classic JFA lettering and old album and merchandise covers. Brian Brannon is under contract with Santa Cruz Speed-Wheels and Independent-Trucks, among others.
style
Despite its more than 30-year history of music, JFA, along with Gang Green and Suicidal Tendencies, is one of the insiders in the skate scene. The band's most successful and best-known song is Skateboard Anarchy . In contrast to most punk bands, JFA never mentioned anti-racism, violence or social criticism in their songs, which is why political punks and the left count them to the genre of fun punk .
