JUKE was a German music streaming service operated by the electronics retailer Media-Saturn . The service was finally discontinued on April 30, 2019.

history

In 2009, Media-Saturn-Holding took over the majority of the nine-year-old company 24-7 Entertainment GmbH , which in the past had already acted as a technical service provider behind the digital music sales portals of MediaMarkt and Saturn. This offer should be supplemented by an independent music streaming service under its own brand.

Juke was first presented to the public at IFA 2011 by JUKE 24-7 Entertainment GmbH . JUKE started at www.myjuke.com in autumn 2011 as a pure music streaming service in Germany. A major relaunch of the German JUKE website took place in August 2015: Since then, the portal can no longer be accessed via the www.myjuke.com domain, but only via www.juke.com. The old service was gradually switched off, as were the download portals from Media Markt and Saturn. All customers who did not object were automatically transferred to the new portal, previous purchases were retained. In the course of the changeover, JUKE was no longer only available as a subscription service, but music could also be purchased digitally, as well as e-books, games, software titles as well as films and series. In many cases, films and series could also be loaned out with a loan period of 48 hours.

At the end of 2017, JUKE announced that from January 1, 2018, only music streaming will be offered. The areas of films & series, books, software & games and the option to purchase music have been discontinued accordingly. Customers who previously purchased items should download them by December 31, 2017 for later offline use. In the case of feature films and TV series, this is not possible under license law - here the company has offered the affected customers a refund of the purchase price.

In 2017, Media-Saturn sold its B2B music subsidiary 24-7 Entertainment, including Juke Entertainment GmbH, to the British company 7digital and at the same time became the largest shareholder and most important customer. A major relaunch including a new logo took place on June 5, 2018. But this did not bring the hoped-for success in the music streaming market. On May 1, 2019, it was decided by contract that Media-Saturn would end its collaboration with 7digital and sell its 11.5% stake after paying a severance payment of EUR 4.5 million. In particular, the contract includes the settlement of the costs of terminating juke music streaming.

The announcement of the date to end the Juke service on April 30, 2019 was made without a press release and without announcement on its own website. The affected subscribers were informed by email. The reason given in the email to the customer for hiring was that Juke's market shares in the music streaming market have not grown at the rate to enable “sustainable positioning”. In addition, on April 16, 2019, the attitude was communicated to the public on a Facebook page, including a picture with the subtitle "Juke - We say goodbye to April 30, 2019". This Facebook message shows that there is no migration assistant and that the affected customers should save the lists of their albums, songs and playlists for manual creation in other services using screenshots. There are no references to consumer rights to data portability under the EU GDPR .

Availability of use

For licensing reasons, JUKE was initially only available in Germany and from a German IP address. In order to be able to access JUKE products abroad, they had to be downloaded beforehand so that they could also be accessed in offline mode. This licensing gap was later closed so that a Juke subscription could also be used abroad via mobile communications.

So that users can also access selected titles offline, JUKE offered the option of downloading pieces of music or playlists to smartphones or tablets - either automatically or manually.

Juke was also a participant in the Telecom “StreamOn” offer, in which music streaming via mobile radio is not counted towards the high-speed data volume.

The streaming service was available via smartphone, tablet, PC / notebook and smart TV and, depending on the application, could be started via free apps or in browser mode. In addition to iOS and Android, there were also various partnerships with device manufacturers, on whose devices JUKE could be used as a music streaming service. For example, JUKE was also integrated in Sonos systems.

Offer catalog and music quality

At the start of 2011, there were 11 million music tracks to choose from. That catalog ended up growing to more than 57 million songs to stream. According to the company, there were contracts with over 80,000 labels that provided a wide music catalog.

The streaming service made it possible to play and jump within all pieces of music in this catalog and to create personal playlists.

The music was delivered in three different qualities: optimized (standard - 48kbps Dolby Audio), high (192 kbps HE ACC) and extreme (320 kbps HE AAC).

participation

Creating a JUKE account was free of charge, and a 30-day, unlimited trial subscription for Musicflat could be concluded. After the 30 days, the further use of the flat rate incurred costs of 9.99 euros per month, otherwise the playback time for each piece of music was limited to 30 seconds. To use the flat rate, there was also the option of purchasing a prepaid package for 3 or 6 months. In contrast to the subscription, this ended automatically after the expiry and could also be paid for with the credit account or JUKE credit cards. The cards were sold in both MediaMarkt and Saturn stores. In October 2016, an annual subscription was added that could only be taken out at Saturn and MediaMarkt and could not be booked via the Juke website.
