Jachmann is a German family name.

Origin and meaning

The nickname Jach is of Hebrew origin and goes back to the Hebrew Jochanan meaning "Yahweh (God) has shown grace".

The name, in its Bohemian-Moravian restriction, is a Silesian form of the name and is derived from the Czech short form Jach (a) of the first name Johannes . First mention of Johannes alias Jacha , Prague 1377.

In the Polish restriction the name Jach is first attested in the 14th century: 1326 Iach molendinator, 1437 Johannem dictum Jach, 1440 Iaskone alias Iach and 1452 Iach de Vilczouicze. These are primarily known as saints' names and were also common first names at a time when family names were not yet common.

The family name Jachmann can be understood as a patronymic name against this background.
