Peithon (son of Agenor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peithon , the son of Agenor († 312 BC near Gaza ) was a Macedonian officer of Alexander the Great and participated in the Diadoch Wars after his death .

India campaign

It is mentioned for the first time during the Indian campaign, but it is often not entirely clear whether it is from him or his namesake Peithon , the son of Krateas. 327 BC He commanded a section of the heavily armed guard fighting the Maller . Then he received the government over the Indian province, which bordered on that of the satrap Philip . A short time later he received the order to defeat the Indian king Musikanos . Peithon succeeded in this; he brought the captured king to Alexander.

Downriver along the Indus Peithon led part of the cavalry on the right bank and met with the main body of the army at Pattala . This is his last mention before Alexander's death. Apparently he was returning to his satrapy in western India, which was also awarded to him at the Triparadeisus conference .

Diadoch Wars

During the dispute between Antigonos and Eumenes , Peithon is never mentioned, so that today it is assumed that he was driven out by Eudemos , who ruled most of India. 316 BC Peithon received the satrapy of Babylon from Antigonus . 314 BC He was appointed to the council of experienced officers who accompanied the inexperienced Demetrius , son of Antigonus, during his first campaign. Also in 312 BC BC Peithon went to war with Demetrios against Ptolemy . Demetrios' army was defeated near Gaza and Peithon fell on the battlefield ( Battle of Gaza ).
