From 1849 to 1852 Jachmann commanded a flotilla of gunboats in Stralsund during the Schleswig-Holstein War . He then became head of the naval department of the Prussian War Ministry in Berlin .

As first officer, Jachmann took part in a trip of the SMS Gefion to South America , the West Indies and North America in 1853/54. He was then appointed head shipyard director in Danzig and corvette captain . In 1857 he became director of a department of the newly established Admiralty . After his promotion to sea captain in 1859, he led the frigate SMS Thetis as commander during an expedition to East Asia and China , from which he returned in December 1862. From then on he was entrusted with the management of the chief of the naval station of the Baltic Sea .

During the German-Danish War in 1864, Jachmann led the naval forces in the Baltic Sea as chief of the station command of the Baltic Sea and was also the commander of the steam corvette SMS Arcona . On March 17, 1864, he led the naval battle at Jasmund ( Rügen ) on the Prussian side , whereupon he was appointed rear admiral . After the war he became head of the Baltic Sea Naval Station in Kiel and also headed the training squadron in the North and Baltic Seas every year . In 1867 he was promoted to President of the Navy Ministry and in 1868 to Vice Admiral. In addition, from 1867 he was the Prussian authorized representative of the Federal Council of the North German Confederation. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 Jachmann was Commander-in-Chief in the North Sea.

After Albrecht von Stosch was appointed Minister of the Navy on December 31, 1871 , Jachmann retired . He was raised to hereditary nobility on November 27, 1882. The Jachmann Bridge in Wilhelmshaven (both the old and the new) is named after him.

Vice-Admiral Eduard von Jachmann's grave site. It is located in Oldenburg-Osternburg, Dreifaltigkeitskirche cemetery, Cloppenburger Strasse. Established in 1887. It is not the original tomb. No information is available about the redesign of the grave site. There is a plaque probably made of cast iron on the brick tombstone. There is an anchor on the grave site.

The grave of Admiral Jachmann is in the cemetery of the Dreifaltigkeitskirche in the Oldenburg district of Osternburg . On the night of the Sunday of the Dead in 1964, the grave site was desecrated by suspected metal thieves who first knocked over the tombstone and then tried to drag away the anchor from the grave. Due to its weight, the thieves left the anchor after 30 meters in front of the cemetery exit, where it was found by churchgoers the next day. The grave site was apparently restored on the same day by members of the “Marineverein Oldenburg”, who looked after the grave site.
