Jack Washington
Ronald "Jack" Washington (born July 17, 1910 in Kansas City , † November 28, 1964 in Oklahoma City ) was an American swing jazz saxophonist (baritone, alto) .
Washington was one of the first with Harry Carney to use the baritone saxophone as a solo instrument. He began on the soprano saxophone , but switched to the baritone while still a student. Immediately after high school he played with Bennie Moten in 1926 , with whom he stayed from brief interruptions (for example with Jesse Stone and his Blues Serenaders ) until his death in 1935, and from 1935 to 1950 in the Count Basie Orchestra (from a brief period in the US Army apart). After the Basie Band broke up, he moved to Oklahoma City and worked at the airport. He only played occasionally (on a Basie Reunion album in 1958).
There are recordings with Moten, Basie, Harry James , Paul Quinichette and Billie Holiday .
