Jackson Hlungwani

Jackson Hlungwani (born 1923 in Nkanyani ; † January 20, 2010 ) was a South African sculptor . He has been an important exponent of Shangaan art since the mid-1980s .

Hlungwani was born the son of a laborer. After losing a finger in an accident in a factory, he became a wood carver. After his blessing as a priest of the African Zionist Church in 1946, he founded his own religious community. Many of the works of art he created were created as ritual objects for church services or as altar decorations.

Hlungwani was discovered in 1985 as part of the Tributaries exhibition , which was particularly dedicated to the work of artists in the homelands .
