Jacob Bolotin

Jacob Bolotin (born January 3, 1888 in Chicago , † April 1, 1924 ) was an American blind medic and campaigner for social equality for the blind .

Life

Bolotin was born in Chicago as the seventh child of a Polish immigrant family. Two of his siblings were also born blind. Bolotin studied medicine at the Chicago College of Medicine, graduating with honors at the age of 24. He became the first completely blind licensed doctor in the United States. He was particularly known for his expertise in the field of heart and lung diseases . He used his many public lectures to advocate the employment of the blind and their full integration into society.

Bolotin founded and led the first scout group , which consisted entirely of blind boys.

Jakob Bolotin died at the age of only thirty-six. Five thousand people attended his funeral.

The National Federation of the Blind (NFB) awarded the Dr. Jacob Bolotin Award for the Blind , which was endowed with $ 100,000.
