Jacob van Liesvelt (* around 1490 in Antwerp ; † November 28, 1545 there ) was an Antwerp printer and Bible translator who printed the first complete translation of the Bible into Dutch in 1526 . This means that there was a printed full Dutch Bible before the Zurich Bible was published as the first complete Alemannic translation in 1530 and the first complete Luther Bible in 1534 .

He translated the part of the New Testament directly from Martin Luther's 1522 edition. He simply changed Luther's East Central German language into the closely related Dutch. For the Old Testament he also used the parts of Luther that had already been published, but translated the missing parts from the Latin Vulgate himself .

After Luther published his first complete Bible in 1534, translating the Old Testament directly from the Greek Septuagint and Hebrew Masoretes , Liesvelt revised his Dutch Bible and in 1535 printed a new edition entirely based on Luther. This edition is the first full Protestant Bible in Dutch that is no longer based in any part on the Vulgate.

Jacob van Liesvelt was close to the Reformation , but he also printed Catholic Bibles and Counter-Reformation texts, such as official ordinances against heresy and even a work by Anna Bijns . However, when he printed a new edition of his Dutch Luther Bible in 1542, he ran into problems with the Antwerp authorities. He was now accused of heresy and sentenced to death. He was executed in Antwerp on November 28, 1545.

His prints were also used by the Anabaptists , who had a great need for Bible translations. When reprints were no longer possible in the Netherlands, they took the Liesvelt Bible with them into exile in East Frisia . In Emden, for example, a Dutch-language Anabaptist Bible was printed by the printer Willem Gailliart , which was mainly based on the translation of Liesvelt, but in the Old Testament was also based on the Latin translations of Erasmus of Rotterdam .

Due to the different spellings of the time, his name is sometimes given as Jakob van Liesveld , or the name Liesfelt Bible with F can be found in the literature.
