Anna Bijns (* 1493 in Antwerp ; † 1575 there ) was a Flemish writer and teacher . Although, as a woman, she was not allowed to be a member of a chamber for rhetoric , she was able to publish her works and was widely recognized by her contemporaries for her literary talent. She is the first author in Dutch-language literature who largely owed her success to the recently invented printing press. Her works were reprinted several times during her lifetime. In the religious conflicts of her time, she decided on the side of the Catholic Church and expressed sharp criticism of the teachings of Martin Luther in her poems . She also criticized the institute of marriage.

Life

Latin edition of Dit is een schoon ende suverlick boecxken… , 1528, 1529

Anna Bijns was the oldest daughter of a tailor . After the death of her father and the wedding of her sister in 1517, her brother Maarten opened a school in Antwerp. She assisted her brother in school. After her brother's marriage in 1536, she opened her own school, where she taught until the age of 80. Anna Bijns was one of the few women who belonged to a teachers' association.

The Franciscans encouraged them to publish their works. Her first published work was Dit is een schoon ende suverlick boecxken inhoudende veel scoone constige refereinen van de eersame ende ingeniose maecht, Anna Bijn (This is a pure and beautiful refrain book of the honorable and ingenious maid Anna Bijns). It was published by Jacob van Liesvelt in Antwerp in 1528 . Her work consists of religious and moralizing poems on the one hand and polemical refrains against Luther on the other hand, but love poems and various satirical verses can also be found in her work. Considered the spearhead of the Counter-Reformation in the Netherlands , it was compared to Philips van Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde , a polemical poet who opposed Calvin's ideas about the Reformation .

The Anna Bijns Prijs (Anna Bijns Prize) still commemorates them today .
