Jacob van Spreeuwen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacob van Spreeuwen (* 1611 in Leiden ; † 1658 or later) was a Dutch painter .

Jacob van Spreeuwen is a little-known painter from the Rembrandt area. In the older literature he is often referred to as Rembrandt's apprentice, although this is considered unlikely by modern research. Although his works show stylistic elements that are reminiscent of Rembrandt, they do not even come close to his creative strength. If he worked for Rembrandt, this is presumed to have been in 1630/31. From the 1940s on, Spreeuwen seems to have oriented himself more towards Gerard Dou than from that point on he specialized in his kind of genre representations . With this reference to Dou, his works visibly increase in quality.
