Jakobikirche

The Protestant Jakobikirche is a listed church building in Lippstadt in the Soest district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The largely unchanged church is located in the area of the city expansion in the early 13th century and was probably built from 1250. The building, which was probably completed earlier, was mentioned in a document in 1295. - It is a three-aisled Gothic hall church without a transept with a mighty western tower. The short nave of only two bays ends in three apses with 5/8 ends in the east . In the middle apse, the main choir, there is a very short rectangular choir area or sanctuary. The two free pillars are round and each have eight services, with the narrow young services ending at a higher height. Another special feature of the Jakobikirche are the blind arcades from the northern apse and choir area with sculptures worth seeing, especially natural foliage. Its leaves seem to go back to ornamentation in and on the Gothic nave of Minden Cathedral. - The exterior is plastered and structured by mostly two-lane and otherwise three-lane tracery windows on the choirs and simple buttresses.

The construction of the church began with the lower choir on the north side. Then the main and southern side choirs were erected in their final height, then the nave and finally the tower in the same width and height. Its helmet, a "Welsche hood", is from 1755 and also resembles that of the Great St. Mary's Church on Lippstädter Markt.

On the north wall of the main choir there is a late Gothic sacrament niche with elaborate framing. The pulpit with the painted depiction of Evangelists and Salvator is a work of the 17th century. The coat of arms of the Rose and von Rosskampff families in the south choir was carved around 1700, the wrought-iron clock tower was installed in the 18th century.

The three-part bronze bell comes from the Junker bell foundry in Brilon and sounds in des′-f′-as ′.

Event center

After extensive restoration, the Jakobikirche Lippstadt has also been a multifunctional event center since autumn 2007. As a cultural space for word, sound and image, exhibitions, lectures and chamber concerts take place here in addition to the regular church services.
