The Protestant Great Marienkirche is a listed church building in Lippstadt .

history

Presumably, around 1205, shortly after the city was founded, the construction of a cruciform basilica began. A beam in the flank tower on the north side dates from around 1200 according to a dendrochronological investigation. The construction sections in the east were probably built under the influence of the city's founder, Count Bernhard II . Some time later, the nave was converted into a Münsterland step hall . In addition to the two existing east towers, an additional one was built in the west. The construction was finished around 1250. The late Gothic hall choir was laid out from 1478 to 1506. The baroque dome of the west tower, which was completed in the second half of the 13th century, dates from 1684. The construction of the chapel, the sacristy and the hall choir was completed in 1478 according to the names. During the renovation from 1964 to 1972, the floors in the ambulatory and in the nave were lowered to the original level; Vault and wall paintings from the 16th century were uncovered. Another restoration took place from 1992 to 1997. The slurry, multi-part building made of quarry stone is structured with ashlar. The smooth nave walls are divided on the north side by four round arched windows and on the south side by three high, pointed arched windows with fish bubble tracery. The fronts of the transept are intricately structured.

Furnishing

  • A late Gothic tabernacle from 1256 is the work of a master from Münster .
  • Late Gothic wall paintings from around 1250 have been preserved in the intermediate choir; St. Catherine and the death of Mary are shown.
  • Two guardian figures of a holy grave from around 1250 are in the north aisle.
  • The baroque high altar from the second half of the 17th century. The three-story column retable is a work by Ernst Romberg; Diederich Epping donated it. It is labeled 1663.
  • Two Gothic chandelier angels are attached to the pillars of the vestibule; originally they belonged to a winged altar in the Gothic style, which is now in the parish church in Hohenbudberg.
  • In the second half of the 15th century the choir stalls were made; it consists of two rows with a total of 19 seats. The cheeks and gusset are richly decorated.
  • Eight paintings deal with the theme of the Eucharist and Redemption; they show what is represented in a typical Protestant way through lettering.
  • Two glass windows by the artist Markus Lüpertz were installed in the west of the church in November 2017. It is an addition to the partially destroyed Luther window from 1883 and a newly created window on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation . The Reformation window shows an abstract person and is meant to symbolize the reformer in everyone. The window is subtitled by Wilhelm Willms with the line of the song “The sky goes up above all” . The windows were officially presented to the community on November 12, 2017.
