Jacobus (from Schwerin)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacobus was titular bishop of Constantia and from 1396 to 1411 auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Schwerin .

Life

At what point in time Jacobus was appointed titular bishop of Constantia is not known, but it was before 1396. According to the name frater and the seal inscription, he was a member of the order. The religious affiliation remains unknown, but it is suspected that Jocobus was with the Dominicans , because his successor to the titular bishopric Constantia was also a Dominican. It also remains unclear whether the elevation to episcopal dignity was made with a view to serving in the diocese of Cammin .

On January 7, 1396, Bishop Jacobus issued an indulgence for the Gertrudenkapelle in Rostock . He referred to himself as vicariua in pontificalibus in this document.

Under March 17, 1399, however, Frater Jacobus Ep. Constanc notarized the by him as vicarius in pontificalibus of Bishop Rudolf III. Consecration of the altar in the choir of the Gertraudenkapelle in Rostock in honor of Saint Mary Magdalene and the Saint Martyr Laurentius as well as Saint Gertrude, which was done by Schwerin . He granted indulgences for certain festivals and occasions and set the conditions for reception. The commemoration for the parish fair should be celebrated on the Tuesday after Whitsun.

Another mention as a Schwerin auxiliary bishop is attested for 1401: “That Jacobus Episcopus Constant. Ecclesiae Sveriensis was in Pontificalibus Vicarius around this time, notes Mr. D. Augustin Balthasar in: Histor. News from the Pomeranian and Rügen Land Laws p. 106 and reports that the intended Vicarius Hern. NN granted an Indulgentz Briff this year. "

Bishop Jacobus may have died before February 11, 1411, since on that day the Dominican Hinrich Grube (or Goulen) was appointed Bishop of Constantia with reference to his death.

seal

A bearded head with a halo in a Gothic niche can be seen in the round seal of Bishop Jacobus.

The inscription reads: S 'FRIS IACOBI EPI CONSTNCIANES.-

The picture allows a further interpretation: a bearded saint with a (pilgrim) hat to which a shell is attached. One could then think of the saint as the patron saint of the seal holder, Saint James.
