Jacopo Ruffini (born June 22, 1805 in Genoa , † June 19, 1833 there ) was an Italian patriot .

Life

Jacopo, the son of lawyer Bernardo Ruffini and his wife Eleonora Curlo Ruffini, was the fourth of thirteen children. Five died in childhood. The father, who came from Finale Ligure , was an outright monarchist. The mother, of noble origin, came from Taggia . Jacopo spent several years of childhood with his uncle, a clergyman in Taggia. He then attended high school in Genoa . After studying law and interning with a notary, Jacopo Ruffini became Vice-President of the Court of Justice of the Genoa Prefecture. Because he didn't like working at the court, he gave up the job and studied medicine.

Through his patriotic mother he became acquainted with the Carbonari , with Mazzini and its political association Young Italy .

In 1829 he joined the Carbonari. As a doctor at the Pammatone Hospital in Genoa, around 1830 he combined some business trips to the French border with conspiratorial activity. After the failed coup attempt in Genoa, which Mazzini led from his exile in Geneva , Jacopo Ruffini was arrested on May 13, 1833. Even under torture, he did not reveal the names of his fellow combatants. On June 19, Jacopo Ruffini was found in his cell with his throat cut. Some historians do not believe in suicide; also because the leader of a conspiracy was usually hanged at the time.
