Jacopo Saltarelli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jacopo d'Andrea Saltarelli (* around 1459 in Florence ) was an Italian painter model , worked for a goldsmith and pursued homosexual prostitution . There is only sparse life data on Saltarelli, the date of his death is not known. The only thing on record is that he was very often noticed in Florence in connection with denunciations of homosexual acts with known or influential people.

Sodomy charges

In April 1476, 17-year-old Jacopo d'Andrea Saltarelli was anonymously accused of sodomy (this meant homosexuality in the Middle Ages and early modern times ) together with Leonardo da Vinci . The written complaint, which named Bartolomeo di Pasquino, Baccino and Lionardo de Tornabuoni, a nephew of Lucrezia Tornabuoni , as participants in addition to Leonardo, had been thrown in the tamburo that the Signoria of Florence set up near the Palazzo Vecchio for anonymous accusations would have. The case came before the authority of the Ufficiali di notte e dei monasteri on April 9, 1476. The text of the anonymous letter reads: Notifico a voi Signori Officiali come egli è vera cosa che Jacopo Saltarelli fratello carnale di Giovanni Salterelli… Lionardo di ser Piero da Vinci sta con Andrea del Verrochio […] Questi hanno avuto a soddomitare decto Jacopo, et so vi fo fed .

The trial caused a sensation in and around Florence. The matter was tried twice within two months, but no testimony or evidence existed. With the advocacy of the families of the other defendants and Leonardo's friend and teacher Andrea del Verrocchio , the lawsuit was dropped and the four men were released from prison.
