Life
Jacqueline de Proyart de Baillescourt was the daughter of Marie-Magdeleine Lannes de Montebello (* 1906) and Jacques de La Chevrelière (* 1893; 1953). In June 1951 she graduated from Radcliffe College with a degree in Slavonic Studies . In 1955 she married Daniel de Proyart de Baillescourt (born February 7, 1925)
Contribution to the publication of Doctor Zhivago
In the spring of 1954, a year after the death of Josef Stalin , Pasternak had presented a few poems in the literary magazine Snamja as a prelude to the novel Doctor Zhivago . He completed the manuscript of Doctor Zhivago in 1955 and sent it to the Gossinoizdat (State Publishing House for Literature) and the Snamja . In April 1956, Pasternak realized that he was using the XX. Had overestimated the CPSU party congress and his novel would not appear in any Soviet publishing house.
Sergio D'Angelo ran a bookstore for the PCI in 1955 when he was hired by Radio Moscow as editor for its Italian program and commissioned by Giangiacomo Feltrinelli as a literary scout. On May 20, 1956, D'Angelo received a Russian manuscript from Boris Pasternak from Doctor Schiwago , which he handed over to the publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli in a hotel on Kurfürstenstrasse in Berlin at the end of May 1956. He commissioned the Slavist Pietro Antonio Zveteremich with the translation into Italian . Feltrinelli's goal was to publish an Italian version within a month of its appearance in the Soviet Union in order to secure rights within the states that, unlike the Soviet Union , had ratified the Berne Convention .
Proyart was an exchange student in Moscow and gained Boris Pasternak's trust in January 1957 . She had good contact with the French embassy in Moscow, where François de Liencourt, Jean-Marie Soutou and Isabelle Esmein helped her with the mailing of the novel.
In a letter to Feltrinelli dated January 12, 1958, Pasternak explains
“The hope to see the book published in the original language exactly as it was written. This delicate matter - as well as all the phantasmagorias around Doctor Zhivago - can have serious consequences for me, and therefore I would like to entrust it to the skilled hands of Madame Jacqueline de Proyart, with whom I am close friends. "
Pasternak's letter was brought to France by Hélène Peltier from the Soviet Union, but was not given to Feltrinelli.
