Jacques Bonne Gigault de Bellefonds (born May 1, 1698 in Château de Montifray near Beaumont-la-Ronce , † July 20, 1746 in Paris ) was a French prelate . He was Archbishop of Arles from 1741 to 1746, and for a short time Archbishop of Paris .

Life

Jacques Bonne Gigault de Bellefonds was the son of Charles Gigault de Bellefonds, Seigneur de Chassin (* 1670), and Marie Anne Catherine Binet de Montifroy. His brother was Charles Joseph Bernardin Gigault de Bellefins, Comte de Bellefonds (1697–1723)

He was ordained a priest around 1723. On October 8, 1735 he was appointed Bishop of Bayonne . Pope Clement XII. confirmed the appointment of 1736. On 27 February Cardinal Melchior de Polignac , Archbishop of Auch , consecrated him a bishop on March 25, 1736. On August 20, 1741, he was appointed Archbishop of Arles, on 25 November 1741, he resigned as bishop back from Bayonne. Pope Benedict XIV confirmed his appointment on December 20, 1741.

On March 4, 1746 he was appointed Archbishop of Paris, the confirmation by Benedict XIV takes place on May 2, 1746. The title of Duc de Saint-Cloud was associated with this office, shortly after taking office he became Pair de France appointed.

Gigault de Bellefonds' tenure in Paris was short; he died of smallpox on July 20, 1746 . Ten days earlier, on July 10, 1746, he had consecrated Charles-Guy Le Borgne de Kermorvan, the new Bishop of Tréguier .

His career was marked by his opposition to Jansenism . He also sentenced Denis Diderot's Pensées philosophiques a few days before his death .

Jacques Bonne Gigault de Bellefonds was buried in Notre-Dame de Paris .
