Jacques-François Gallay (born December 8, 1795 in Perpignan , † October 18, 1864 in Paris ) was a French horn player and composer.

Live and act

Gallay received his first horn lessons from his father at the age of 10. Thanks to his talent, he made his debut as horn soloist in François Devienne's opera Les Visitandines just four years later in the theater of Perpignan . He was unable to take up his studies at the Paris Conservatory with Louis François Dauprat until 1820 and graduated with a Premier Prix after just one year . He then became a member of various Paris orchestras, including the royal chapel. In 1833 he succeeded Dauprat as Professor of Horn (natural horn) at the Conservatory and held this position until 1864.

Gallay's compositional output is quite extensive. His didactic works include numerous etudes as well as a horn school with the title Méthode complète pour le cor . He composed numerous chamber music works and two horn concerts and a rondo pastoral for horn and orchestra.
