Jacques Francœur

Jacques Francœur ( 1925 - July 24, 2005 ) was a French-Canadian businessman and journalist. He is better known as the owner of the Unimédia group of companies, which makes him one of the media moguls in Quebec. He was the son of Louis Francœur.

biography

Jacques Francœur had a long career in publishing, starting at the age of 16 with the daily La Patrie . He later worked for the Montreal Daily Star and The Gazette . Years later, he acquired the Le Guide du Nord newspaper , which marked the beginning of the emergence of one of the most important media companies in French-speaking Canada.

He founded the Dimanche-Matin newspaper . This was followed by a partnership with businessman Paul Desmarais , which lasted a few years , in which the Trans-Canada newspaper group was built. Towards the end of the 1960s, the weeklies Le Petit Journal , Photo Journal , and La Patrie , which he discontinued in 1978. In 1973 he founded Unimédia , which became a publishing group with a workforce of 2,000 and operating four printing plants. The publishing group published a weekly and two daily newspapers: Le Droit in Ottawa, Le Soleil in Québec City and Le Quotidien in Chicoutimi.

After he sold Unimédia to Conrad Black in 1987 , he set up one of the most famous private foundations in Quebec, the Fondation Jacques Francoeur . This foundation is dedicated to promoting charities that care for those in need and assisted organizations that promoted education. Jacques Francœur was also involved in social and cultural projects for the less fortunate and granted scholarships to journalists in Quebec. He was also an influential member of many business and community associations, he was the former president of the "Newspaper Association of Canada" and the "Daily Newspaper Association" in Québec.

Francœur also worked abroad. He was an executive member of the International Press Institute in London and from 1982 to 1990 served on the Directors' Committee of the American Association of Newspaper Editors. In 1995 he received a public honor from Concordia University .
