Jacques Gabriel
Jacques Gabriel , sometimes also Jacques V. Gabriel , (* 1667 in Paris ; † April 23, 1742 ibid.) Was a French architect of the Baroque period .
Life
Jacques Gabriel was the son of a builder in the service of the Bâtiments du Roi and a cousin of the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart . Already at the age of 21 he was dressed under King Louis XV. the office of controller général des Bâtiments du Roi . In 1690 he accompanied the builder Robert de Cotte on an 18-month trip to Italy. After his return, the king made repeated use of his services on several construction projects in the Palace of Versailles . After de Cotte resigned as Premier Architecte du Roi in 1734, he took over his office and passed it on to his son Ange-Jacques Gabriel eight years later .
Works
It is said that Jacques Gabriel was an excellent site manager and organizer, but had most of the designs and drawings done by others (e.g. Pierre Lepautre and Jean Aubert). He assisted the builders of the Palais Bourbon and the nearby Hôtel de Lassay and the Hôtel Biron .
The building of Choisy Castle (1680–1686) for Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans , Duchess of Montpensier and cousin of Louis XIV , was considered to be his masterpiece for a long time , but because of his young age he can only focus on completing that of others Family members have taken care of the planned and started construction. The building was demolished in the 19th century.
In the early 1640s, he and his assistants designed the new building for La Rochelle Cathedral , which continued under the direction of his son after his death, but was not completed until 1857.
