Jahkara Smith (born September 5, 1996 ) is an American YouTuber as Sailor J and actress , known for her first acting and series lead role in NOS4A2 .

Career

Smith grew up in poverty in St. Louis , Missouri and joined the United States Air Force as a mechanic in 2014 for financial reasons . She originally posted videos on Facebook for her sister, but switched to YouTube so she could share them. Her video Getting a man 101 , which she filmed the day she was on sick leave, was shared 13,000 times on Facebook that same day. As Sailor J (inspired by Sailor Moon ), she published the video Contouring 101 on YouTube in October 2017that went viral very quickly. Her videos are satirical makeup tutorials with a socially critical background on topics such as feminism, racial inequality and social justice. In April 2018, she was contacted by the casting director for NOS4A2 , who noticed her videos, and despite lacking acting experience , she got her first role. She left the military for this job in July 2018. She also stopped producing videos because she is no longer satisfied with YouTube as a platform because of its handling of transgender YouTubers and people of color .

Her acting debut on NOS4A2 was a series lead role as well as her second engagement in the episode Pure of Into the Dark .
