Jake (spirit)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jake (also: Jamaican Ginger) was a widespread slang expression for a Jamaican ginger extract in the USA at the beginning of the 20th century . It was sold as medicine , but was mainly used to circumvent the restrictive alcohol policy ( see Prohibition ). Jake was up to 85% alcohol .

Jake contained tricresyl phosphates , a neurotoxin . They were added to circumvent the mandatory tests for the minimum content of ginger, which made the taste very bitter and almost inedible. In the 1930s, the use of Jake in the United States led to a condition called "Jake Leg" or "ginger jake paralysis".
