Jakob Koenen

Jakob Koenen (born June 5, 1907 in Lippstadt ; † January 16, 1974 ibid) was a German SPD politician and an important sports official .

Life

After attending high school , Koenen, who was a Roman Catholic , completed an apprenticeship as an upholsterer . In 1930 he passed the master craftsman's examination and took over the management of a company. Three years later he started his own business with an upholstery workshop. In 1946 the local upholstery and wallpapering trade elected him head master .

Political career

Koenen was a member of the German Bundestag from 1953 to 1969. He was also mayor of Lippstadt for a total of 26 years from November 9, 1948 until his death. After his first election in autumn 1948, he formed the first social-liberal coalition at municipal level in Germany and became the city's first post-war mayor. During his tenure he was responsible for the very rapid economic boom in the city.

From 1952 Koenen was also Vice President of the North Rhine-Westphalian Association of Cities.

Athletic career

Jakob Koenen was active as a sports official in many ways. Football was always in the foreground. Among other things, he was the first chairman of the soccer club Teutonia Lippstadt , long-time chairman of the soccer and athletics association of Westphalia , vice-presidency of the German Sports Association and treasurer of the German Soccer Association (DFB) . Incidentally, the Lippstadt resident was elected to the footballers' presidium at that Bundestag of the DFB, which also decided on the formation of the Bundesliga in Dortmund in 1962.

Awards

After 25 years as mayor, he was made an honorary citizen of Lippstadt.

Others

The Jakob-Koenen-Bad in Lippstadt (which has since been closed and demolished) and Jakob-Koenen-Strasse in Kamen were named after Koenen . The office of the FLVW and the SportCentrum Kamen-Kaiserau , the former Kaiserau sports school, are located in this street .
