Jakob Lestschinsky

Jakob Lestschinsky (also Jacob Lestschinsky ; born August 26, 1876 in Horodyschtsche , Russian Empire ; died March 22, 1966 in Jerusalem ) was a statistician and Jewish scholar who wrote mostly in Yiddish , but also in German , who was particularly concerned with the economic situation of the Jews of Europe concerned.

Life

Lestschinsky was an autodidact who had his first publication on statistics in 1903. From 1910 he stayed in Zurich to study and returned to Russia in 1913. From 1920 he was a correspondent for the New York Yiddish-language newspaper Forverts in Berlin . In 1925 he was one of the founders of the YIVO and headed its section for economic statistics in Berlin. Although he was a Lithuanian citizen, he was imprisoned for four days by the National Socialists on March 11, 1933 and then expelled. In 1938 he emigrated to the USA , in 1959 he went to Israel .
