Jakob Scheiffelhut

Jakob Scheiffelhut (born May 19, 1647 in Augsburg ; † July 2, 1709 there ) was a German musician and composer of the Baroque era .

Life

Jakob Scheiffelhut received his musical training in the Augsburg Choir St. Anna with Tobias Kriegsdorfer (1608–1686). He received lessons in " striking an instrument " from a town piper . In 1666 he got a job as a town piper, with permission to play at weddings or at festive official acts. Since 1673 he has been an instrumental teacher as well as wind instruments and strings in the St. Anna choir. In 1694 he became second choir regent under Cantor Georg Schmezer (1642-1697), whose successor he tried in vain in 1697. From 1697 until his death in 1709 he was choir regent at the Barfüßerkirche . His two marriages had seven children.

Scheiffelhut's work encompasses sacred and secular music. The vocal music, sometimes accompanied by instruments, consists mainly of funeral and wedding music. All printed works that were widespread in Germany were published in Augsburg. He was considered an important German suite composer of the 17th century, especially through his collections of “Musical Minds Delights”, “Lovely Spring Beginning”, and “Musical Clover Leaf”. He was famous among others by the music theorists Johann Mattheson and Wolfgang Caspar Printz in his " Historical Description of the Noble Singing and Kling Art " (Dresden, 1690). Scheiffelhut was one of the pioneers of French instrumental music in Germany.
