The James Fountain

The Jakobusbrunnen is a well in Germering . It is located on the corner of Alte Kirchstrasse / Salzstrasse near the St. Jakobskirche and the maypole. It was designed by the sculptor Wolfgang Wright. The fountain system was inaugurated by Pastor Wolfgang Borm in July 2003 as part of a festival. The work of art was donated by the support association for home care Unterpfaffenhofen-Germering, whose chairman Albert Bichler was the initiator for the construction of the fountain. His appeal for donations was largely welcomed by the citizens of Germering; some groups from the Altdorf organized benefit events.

history

The idea to build a village well came back in September 1991 from the Friends' Association for Homeland Care, which wrote a letter to Mayor Peter Braun. Finally, in November 1999, a first model of the fountain by the artist Wolfgang Wright with a life-size figure of Saint James was presented, but the city council did not approve it. When the association almost wanted to give up the project, the current SPD city councilor Helmut Ankenbrand reached an intergroup consensus for a new model and for the city to assume the planning costs. In December 2002, a bronze bust of St. James was commissioned. Since only the figure of St. James was donated by the Friends' Association for Home Care, the city of Germering had to cover the total costs of around € 38,000 for the design of the square and the fully automatic pumping system. Planning costs for the design of the square did not arise because the city of Germering had its own landscape architect , Brian Meakins. The city also pays for the maintenance of the facility. In total, the construction of the well cost around € 73,000.

Appearance

The pilgrim saint is shown as a half-figure with a slouch hat and walking stick. His cloak is decorated with two scallops , and he is holding a small bowl in the other hand. The three-part basin, into which the bronze spouts flow, are made of Bayerwald granite and in turn flow into a circular basin on the floor. This allows you to wash your hands at the top of the spouts, cool your arms in the three-part basin and your feet in the bottom basin. The three segments of the basin are repeated in the circular area around the fountain in the form of porphyry stones. Thus the shape of the fountain can be found again on the ground. In addition, the area is framed by a flower bed, which is planted and cared for by the association "Flower and Garden Friends", facing the Salzstrasse. Every year at Easter, the fountain is decorated with Easter eggs, which pupils from the surrounding primary schools have also painted. There are several trees around the fountain and three semicircular benches that were custom-made by the building yard.
