Jakow Borissowitsch Pessin ( Russian Яков Борисович Песин , English transcription Yakov Pesin ; * 1946 in Moscow ) is a Russian mathematician who deals with dynamic systems and ergodic theory.

Pessin 1981

Pessin studied at the Lomonosov University (with a diploma in 1970) and received his doctorate in 1979 at the Gorki State University under Dmitri Viktorovich Anossov . From 1970 to 1984 he worked mostly as a programmer at various Moscow institutes. He could only do mathematics in his spare time. In the late 1980s he went to the University of Chicago as a visiting professor . Since 1990 he has been at Pennsylvania State University , where he is a professor.

An entropy formula for invariant measures in dynamic systems and the theory of non-uniform hyperbolicity ( Pesin theory ) are named after him .

Pesin is the editor of Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems .

He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society and has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 2019 .
