James Adair (* around 1709 in County Antrim , Ireland ; † around 1783 ) was an Irish-born trader and intimate connoisseur of the Indian tribes of southeastern North America. After his emigration to America he lived from 1735 to 1775 mainly with the Cherokee and the Chickasaw . He was married to several Indian women and had a number of children with them.

In 1775 James Adair returned to England , where he wrote a record of his life with the Indians. This later became known as The History of the American Indians . These records are considered a detailed description of Indian life, but are not undisputed due to their interpretations.
