James Henry Adams (born June 7, 1896 in Chesterfield , † October 31, 1973 ) was an English football player.

Career

Adams played for many years in non-league football in the area around Chesterfield , even before the First World War in Staveley and Lowgates , from 1915 in Eckington and from 1918 in New Whittington , before he probably came to Staveley Town in April 1921 and made his first league appearance was praised for “getting the ball well in the middle and guiding the ball along the wing in excellent style in several situations”. With the club he won the Derbyshire Senior League and the Derbyshire Senior Cup at the end of the season . At the end of May he also won with the club 3-2 against a selection called Staveley Wanderers , which consisted of professionals from Staveley (including Frank Bates , Ernest Needham , Wilf Lievesley , George Needham and Harry Wright ).

In the summer of 1921, Adams, described by the press as a "faster right winger", moved to the Football League Third Division North for Chesterfield FC , but was only used in the reserve team in the Central Alliance in the first half of the season . With the reserve team he won the Chesterfield Hospital Cup in May 1922 by a 2-0 final victory over Matlock Town , both in the final and in the 5-1 semi-final victory against his previous club Staveley Town, he was successful as a scorer.

On March 22, 1922 he made his competitive debut for the first team in a home game against AFC Ashington (0-1). In the following weeks he formed the right attacking side in a total of six league games with Joe Cooper . In a 1-0 home win in early April against FC Walsall , in which he had prepared the winning goal from center forward Darrell Lacey , Adams was certified to have "worked exceptionally hard". On his last appearance in early May, a 2-1 home win on the final day of the season against Rochdale AFC , a correspondent noted: "Adams lacks both experience and judgment for this category of football." The following season Adams returned to Staveley Town and played later also for local rivals Matlock Town.

Away from the soccer field, Adams earned his living as a warehouse manager for the Staveley Iron & Chemical Company .
