James Bannerman

James Bannerman (* 1790 ; † March 12, 1858 ) was Governor of the British Gold Coast , today's Ghana , from December 4, 1850 to October 14, 1851 .

James Bannerman was born on the Gold Coast in 1790, his mother was a Fanti , his father Scottish . Despite his European father, he always considered himself an African, according to the customs of the Akan peoples , to which the Fanti belong. He was educated in England and on the Gold Coast, married an Ashanti princess , Yaa Hom, with whom he had six children.

James Bannerman later became the first mayor of Accra , and one of his sons founded the Accra Herald newspaper in 1861 .
