Sir James Denham-Steuart, 7th Baronet (born October 21, 1712 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † November 26, 1780 in Coltness , Lancashire ) was a British economist and a later exponent of mercantilism .

He published his main work “An Inquiry into the Principles of Political Economy” in 1767, nine years before Adam Smith's work “Wealth of Nations”, which rejected mercantilism. Along with Turgot , Thünen and Malthus , he is considered to be one of the "discoverers" of the economic income law . While Smith and other British economists ignored him, Denham-Steuart was received comparatively strongly in Germany, for example by Hegel , Marx and the historical school .
