James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton

James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton (born July 5, 1724 , † January 17, 1758 in Great Tew ) was a Scottish nobleman.

James was a son of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton and his first wife Anne Cochrane. At birth he was given the courtesy title of Marquess of Clydesdale . When his father died in 1742, he inherited his title of nobility as 6th Duke of Hamilton , 3rd Duke of Brandon , 6th Marquess of Clydesdale , 5th Earl of Lanark , 6th Earl of Arran .

Hamilton was trained in Winchester and Oxford. From 1743 he was an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford . In 1755 he was accepted as a knight in the thistle order . He died at the age of 33 from complications from a cold that he caught while hunting.

James married the famous beauty Elizabeth Gunning , later Baroness Hamilton of Hameldon (1733-1790), daughter of Colonel John Gunning, who, after the untimely death of her husband, married John Campbell, 5th Duke of Argyll in 1759 . James Hamilton had three children with her:
