Edward Smith-Stanley, 12th Earl of Derby (born September 12, 1752 at Patten House in Preston , † October 21, 1834 in the Derby Chapel in Ormskirk ) was a British politician and owner and breeder of racehorses.

Live and act

He attended Eton College and then Trinity College at Cambridge University . Due to the early death of his father, he inherited the title of his grandfather Edward Stanley, 11th Earl of Derby, when he died in 1776 .

In 1783 as well as again in 1806/7 he carried government responsibility as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster .

He owned an estate called "The Oakes" near Epsom . The from horse racing possessed planned with his friends in 1778 a mare race as " Epsom Oaks was known." Thereupon the creation of another race for stallions was considered. On May 4, 1780, the first derby was run. The favorite Diomed won.

The Derby , as the most important race for three-year-old mares and stallions , has been held in countless countries around the world since then. Numerous other sporting events are also called derby .
