James Henry Daroux (born September 22, 1870 in Addisons Flat , † January 25, 1943 ) was a photographer in New Zealand .

Life

The twin brothers James Henry and Louis John Daroux were sons of Henri and Jane Daroux, b. McPeak. James Daroux stayed in Wellington in 1905 ; he worked as a photographer at 45 Vivian Street. Since 1911 at the latest he lived with his wife Florence Julia Daroux in the Hutt Valley ; for 1911 to 1914 there is evidence of a residence on Stevens Road in Hutt; for 1915 a studio in Trentham. During the First World War , he photographed soldiers preparing for their deployment.

Further stages in his life are documented by advertisements that he had published from time to time: In 1918 Daroux placed an advertisement because he was looking to buy a house in Upper Hutt or Wallaceville , in 1921 he apparently lived in Wallaceville, where he had a bungalow that same year wished for sale near the Trentham Hotel.

James Henry Daroux is best known for his documentation of the destruction caused by the Hawke's Bay earthquake in 1931. In 1948 his pictures were bought by the Alexander Turnbull Library , which meanwhile also owns the estate of his twin brother.
