James J. "Jim" Tedesco III (born February 5, 1953 in Paramus , New Jersey ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Democratic Party and was mayor of his hometown Paramus for two terms from 2003 to 2010. Since January 1, 2015, Tedesco has been "County Executive" of Bergen County in the state of New Jersey.

Life

James Tedesco was born in Paramus, New Jersey, to James Tedesco Jr. and Myrtle Tedesco. In 1971 he graduated from Paramus High School. In 1976 Tedesco joined the Paramus Fire Department, where his father was already active. There he was elected Chief of Department twice before retiring from fire service after 37 years of age.

In 1973 Tedesco married his former classmate Renee Marano. He has two daughters and a son and six grandchildren. His wife died of lung cancer on April 28, 2009 .

Political career

Tedesco began his political career in 2000 as a member of the Paramus Borough Council before he was elected mayor of his hometown Paramus in 2003. Tedesco carried out this office for two terms until 2010, after which he did not stand for election and was replaced by Richard LaBarbiera . On November 5, 2013, James Tedesco was elected to the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders, which he took up on January 1, 2014.

Also in 2014, James Tedesco was selected as a Democratic nominee for Bergen County's County Executive. In the election on November 5, 2014, Tedesco prevailed with 54.2 percent of the vote against the Republican candidate Kathleen Donovan , who had previously held the office of county executive. Tedesco took office on January 1, 2015, and was officially sworn in on January 4, 2015 in front of the Bergen Community College building. As a first act, Tedesco signed a contract in which the merger of the Bergen County Police Department with the Bergen County Sheriff's Department was agreed. Tedesco is also committed to veterans , after he took office Bergen County was the only county in the United States that did not have homeless war veterans.

On February 5, 2018, James Tedesco announced that he was running again for election to the county executive in November of the same year. In the process, New Jersey Governor Philip D. Murphy named Tedesco the most suitable person for office. In the November 7, 2018 election, Tedesco was re-elected against the Republican candidate and Mayor of Bergenfield , Norman Schmelz . On January 1, 2019, Tedesco took up his second term of office.
