James Jacob Ritty (born October 29, 1836 in Dayton , Ohio , † March 29, 1918 ) was an American local owner in Dayton, who in 1879 applied for a patent for the first cash register in order to defend himself against his thieving servants.

He received the patent together with John Birch on January 30th, 1883. Even then, the typical bell that went around the world was present and was also used by the music group Pink Floyd as an introduction to Money .

As a "dealer in pure whiskeys, fine wines, and cigars" he opened his first saloon in 1871, his pony house in 1882 and retired in 1895 from business life.

After Ritty had founded a small factory for the production of his "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashiers" he was soon overwhelmed with the management of two companies - after all, are in his "Pony House" the likes of Buffalo Bill Cody , Jack Dempsey and the bank robber John Dillinger have gathered . He sold his factory to Jacob H. Eckert of Cincinnati , who created the National Manufacturing Company from it . In 1884, however, this was again sold to John H. Patterson , who continued and expanded the company as the National Cash Register Company (today: NCR Corporation ).

Ritty's Pony House was continued uninterrupted from 1882 to 1967 - even during the Prohibition era , at that time as the "Pony House Stag Hotel". Today, the rebuilt inventory of this saloon is a local Dayton Historic Monument .
