The Jamestown massacre took place on March 22, 1622 in the vicinity of the English settlement of Jamestown in Virginia and was the first major massacre by Indians of whites in North America.

The English Powhatan Wars began as early as 1608. In 1614, the hostilities temporarily ended, but without a formal peace. Eight years later raided Pamunkey - Indians under Sachem Opechancanough around Jamestown in James City County farms and homes. With his warriors he destroyed over seventy English settlements. Of the more than 1,200 colonists, 347 were killed.

When the surviving colonists called Opechancanough and his warriors for a meeting, they fell upon the Indians. Opechancanough managed to escape. 22 years later, he was caught and shot by a guard in prison. Most of the settlers were killed along the James River during the Indian Rebellion of 1622. The English settlements were invaded sporadically until 1630.
