Jamila Abbas

Jamila Abbas (* 1984 in Kenya ) is a Kenyan IT expert and entrepreneur.

Origin and education

Jamila Abbas was born in Kenya in 1984. She studied software engineering at Strathmore University in Nairobi and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree .

Career

After completing her studies, Jamila Abbas was employed by the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). She became a member of the technology association iHub , which serves as an information exchange for technology freaks . Here she met her fellow student Susan Oguya again. Together with three other Strathmore students, Linda Omwenga, Lillian Nduati and Catherine Kiguru, they took part in the IPO48 Competition 2011 , a competition for software development. There were 100 participants organized in seventeen teams. The task was to develop a marketable computer program within 48 hours .

The competition was organized by the HumanIPO technology platform , which was founded in Estonia in 2010 . In November 2011 the five women won the competition with their M-Farm application . The program enables smallholder farmers to work easily with dealers and cooperatives and for their products to have timely market access at reasonable prices. The prize money was KSh 1 million (approx. € 14,000).

The group used the profit to set up M-Farm Kenya Limited . Jamila Abbas became CEO , Susan Oguya COO . Linda Omwenga and Catherine Kiguru took over marketing and Lillian Nduati was responsible for public relations. Today, M-Farm offers users information from all relevant areas of agriculture such as machines, seeds, weather and stock market reports.

Abbas is the country chairman of the New Vision Foundation , a non-profit organization headquartered in Minneapolis in the field of education and cultural work.
