Jamill Kelly

Jamill Kelly (born October 25, 1977 in Atwater , California ) is an American wrestler . He won a silver free style lightweight medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics .

Career

Jamill Kelly grew up in Atwater and attended high school there. At this high school he also learned wrestling (free style). As a high school wrestler, he did not have much success. His best result of that time was a 4th featherweight finish in the California State High School Championships . Jamill Kelly then attended Oklahoma State University. He came into the hands of former Olympic champion John Smith (wrestler) , who worked there as a coach in Stillwater . John Smith formed Jamill Kelly into a world-class wrestler within a short time, who also started for the Gator Wrestling Club.

In 2001 Jamill Kelly was US student champion (NCAA champion) in the featherweight division, came in 2nd place at the Sunkist Kids Open and took 3rd place in the USA championship. After he had prevailed in the qualification for the Pan American Championships, he went to these, which took place in Santo Domingo , in the featherweight division. He reached the 2nd place behind the Cuban Carlos Julian Ortiz Castillo.

In 2002 Jamill Kelly became US runner-up in the lightweight division and came in 3rd place in the elimination for the world championship.

In 2003 he came in the US lightweight championship only on 5th place, but won the elimination for the world championship before Chris Bono and Doug Schwab . He was then initially used at the Pan American Games, where he came in second behind Serguet Rondon Pedroso from Cuba and ahead of Edison Hurtado Lerma from Colombia . At the subsequent World Championships in New York City , he won the lightweight in his first fight over Ramesh Kumar from India , but then lost again to Serguet Rondon Pedroso and only reached 28th place.

In 2004 Jamill Kelly won the US Olympic elimination against Jared Lawrence , whom he defeated twice in three fights.
