Jan Christoph Meister (born January 17, 1955 in Montréal ) is a German specialist in German.

Life

From 1974 to 1981 he studied German, history, educational science and English , first state examination (higher teaching qualification) at the University of Hamburg . From 1981 to 1985 he was a research assistant at the Institute for German Studies II at the University of Hamburg; also PhD (1985). From 1986 to 1995 he was Lecturer , Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor ad hominem (tenured) and Head of German Department / Deputy Chairperson Modern Languages ​​at the University of the Witwatersrand .

After completing his habilitation in Hamburg in 2001 with a thesis on literary action theory and computer philology , he was project manager for the e-learning project “Narrnetz” at the University of Hamburg from 2001 to 2006, project manager in the DFG research project “Story Generator Algorithms”, research assistant at the Research group narratology , sub-project “The temporality effect” and chairman of the computer philology department; Co-author and coordinator for the e-learning course C-Phil Online.

In the summer semester of 2006 he taught at the professorship for modern German literature and computer philology at the University of Munich . From the winter semester 2006/2007 he was professor for "Modern German literature with a focus on the theory of literature and methodology of text analysis including computer philology" and from the winter semester 2018/2019 he was a university professor for "Digital Humanities with a focus on modern German literature" in the language department , Literature, Media I of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Hamburg.

Meister's main research interests are digital humanities, narratology, Austrian literature of the 20th century and fantastic literature.

In the research field of digital humanities he has a. a. From 2013–2016 he was Chair of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Digital Humanities (EADH) and a member of the Executive Committee of the international umbrella organization ADHO (Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations). 2012–2015 he was the founding chairman of the German-speaking association Dhd (Digital Humanities in German-speaking countries) and local organizer of the international specialist conference DH 2012 at the University of Hamburg. His research activities in this area include the third-party funded projects heureCLÉA (2013–2016), 3DH (2015–2018) and forTEXT (2017–2020) as well as the development and provision of CATMA (since 2008), a freely usable open source web application for digital Text annotation and analysis.

In the field of narratology, Meister has a. a. as a member and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Narratology (ICN) at the University of Hamburg and as Executive Editor of the living handbook for narratology (lhn).
