Jan Bruno Kawelke (* 1992 in Oberhausen ) is a German music journalist. He also works as a rapper under the pseudonym Icarus .

Life

Kawelke grew up in Oberhausen and, in addition to studying journalism at the Westphalian University of Gelsenkirchen, began poetry and rapping. In 2013 he appeared together with Jan Philip Binder as the artist collective “Jan und Jan” and exhibited works of art in combination with poetry. At the beginning of 2014 he took part in the young talent competition "RAPutation" and made it to the finals, followed a few months later by releasing his first studio album Gold under the pseudonym Icarus . After completing his studies, there followed journalistic assignments for print media such as Juice or Zeit Online as well as a journalistic program traineeship at Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR). At WDR he met the journalist Vassili Golod, with whom he has been moderating the podcast Machiavelli - Rap & Politik since 2018 , which was nominated for several awards and was named the third best podcast of 2018 by Spiegel . Since 2019, he has regularly moderated the music program Soundcheck on the radio station WDR Cosmo .
