Jan Koster

Jan Koster (born July 8, 1945 in Delft ) is a Dutch linguist . He is professor of linguistics at the University of Groningen .

He studied at the University of Amsterdam , where he received his PhD in 1978 after attending MIT in 1976. Before moving to Groningen in 1986, he was a lecturer at the Universities of Amsterdam and Utrecht and Associate Professor at Tilburg University .

With Henk van Riemsdijk and Jean-Roger Vergnaud , Koster was one of the founders of GLOW , the largest European organization of generative linguistics. He co-founded and edited The Linguistic Review and is the co-editor of Studies in Generative Grammar .

His specialty is theoretical syntax and the history of linguistics . He has made significant contributions to theories of sentence order , locality, and anaphors .
