Jan Morávek (historian)
Jan Morávek (born May 9, 1887 in Jitschin , † June 4, 1960 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovak historian and archivist.
Life
In 1904 he began to study history at the Philosophical Faculty in Prague and worked from 1909 to 1910 as an external member of the Historical Institute in Vienna's archives. In 1910 he received his doctorate in philosophy in Prague. In 1911, together with Zdeněk Wirth , he compiled a list of cultural monuments in the Jitschin district. In 1912 he received a residency in Rome for his editing work on the Monumenta Vaticana . In 1918 he conducted research in the archives of the Vienna Court Chamber, one year later became a member of the council commission for the return of historical Bohemian archives. From 1920 Morávek worked in the Ministry of Education and Public Enlightenment, at the same time head of the archive at Prague Castle until 1948 , and from 1948 to 1960 as a technical advisor. From 1935 he took over the chairmanship of the archive company.
Works
His monographs, which dealt with the history of art, for example in the era of Rudolfine painting, are particularly important . His original writings are stored in the Prague Castle Archives and in the Institute of Art History at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic .
