Jan Olbrycht

Jan Marian Olbrycht (born September 21, 1952 in Rybnik ) is a Polish politician of the Civic Platform (PO) and sociologist .

Life

Olbyrcht studied sociology at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and graduated in 1976 with a master's degree . He then taught until 1990 as a lecturer at the University of Silesia , branch in Cieszyn . In 1984 Jan Olbrycht received his doctorate in sociology and in 1985 took up a position as a lecturer at the Jagiellonian University, which he held until 1989. He was mayor of Cieszyn from 1990 to 1998. From 1998 to 2002 Jan Olbrycht was Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship and from 2002 to 2004 he was a member of the Voivodeship Sejmik .

Olbrycht has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004 . There he is a member of the conservative group of the European People's Party . In 2005 he was awarded the Kaiser Maximilian Prize for his services to European regional and local politics .
