Jan Sanders (born July 12, 1919 in Kwadijk ; † December 21, 2000 ) was a Dutch draftsman. He was best known for his humorous pictures of seafaring life.

Life

Sanders was born on as the son of a worker and a teacher and grew up in a workers' settlement in Beemster Land. After his school days at the Meer uitgebreid lager onderwijs (MULO) he had various jobs before a drawing teacher at the Hogereburgerschool , where his mother taught, discovered his talent for drawing. Sanders became a draftsman, graduated from the Amsterdam Academy and started his own business in 1945. Among other things, he worked as an illustrator for books, magazines, calendars and also created his own pictures. He became known for his calendars printed on behalf of the Dutch paint company Sigma Coatings with drawings about the lives of seafarers. Other regular clients were the Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) shipyard and the heavy haulage company Mammoet . From the late 1970s, his drawings came out as books in several languages. Although the portrayal of seafarers and their lives on board formed a focus in his work, Sanders himself only traveled a short distance on a ship once in his life.

In addition to his work as an illustrator, Sanders has also worked as a drawing teacher at the Rietveld Academy since the 1980s and worked as the director of an amateur theater stage. In 1985 Sanders was awarded the bronze Ton-Smits-Penning.

Sanders was married and had two sons, Philip-Jan (* 1959) and Marcus (* 1964).
