Jan Schmidt (born June 29, 1967 in Kiel ) is a German physicist and solar energy researcher.

After receiving his doctorate in physics in 1998 at the University of Hanover , he carried out research from 1998 to 2000 as a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, and from 2000 to 2001 at the University of Stuttgart . Since 2001 he has been researching the fields of photovoltaics and semiconductor physics at the Institute for Solar Energy Research Hameln (ISFH) . In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the University of Hanover on the subject of performance-limiting defects in silicon solar cells . In 2010 he was appointed adjunct professor at Leibniz University Hannover and in 2016 university professor for photovoltaic materials research. As of February 2020, his h-index is 64.
