Jan Six (art historian)

Jan Six van Hillegom (* 1857 in Amsterdam ; † December 8, 1926 there ) was a Dutch art historian and classical archaeologist .

Jan Six from the Dutch noble and patrician family of the Six van Hillegom studied Classical Philology at the University of Amsterdam and Classical Archeology with Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz at the University of Bonn . In the 1880s he stayed several times in Rome and was part of the environment of the Archaeological Institute of the German Empire . In 1890 he became a professor of art history at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1896 he changed to succeed Allard Piersonas an associate professor at the University of Amsterdam, where he became a full professor for aesthetics and art history in 1918. He expanded the collection started by Allard Pierson with many pieces from his own collection of antique cabaret and books, which several years after his death from Jan Lodewijk Pierson became the Allard Pierson Museum .

Six researched primarily on Dutch art - one of his ancestors of the same name was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn - and on ancient art. The Six technique of Greek vase painting was named after Six .
