Emilie Haspels (1948)

Caroline Henriette Emilie Haspels (born September 15, 1894 in Diepenveen , † December 25, 1980 in Capelle aan den IJssel ) was a Dutch classical archaeologist .

Emilie Haspels was the daughter of George Frans Haspels . In 1935 she was at the University of Utrecht with the work tot de bijdrage study van Attic zwartfigurig doctorate . The resulting book Attic black-figured lekythoi became the standard work in the field of black-figure vase painting .

From 1937 to 1939 she carried out excavations in the Midas city in Phrygia on behalf of the Institut Français d'Etudes Anatoliennes under the official excavation direction of Albert Gabriel . Surprised by the outbreak of war, she was unable to return to Europe and had to stay in Istanbul, where she was a. taught at Istanbul University. From 1946 to 1965 she was Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Amsterdam .
