Jan van Leeuwen (born February 8, 1850 in Zegwaard , † July 21, 1924 in Melchtal ) was a Dutch Graecist .

Life

Jan van Leeuwen received his first education from his father, the pastor Jan van Leeuwen (born December 30, 1821 in Rotterdam, † December 4, 1892 in Amsterdam), and at the village school of his birthplace. In 1866 he became a student at the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam , in 1869 he began his studies of literature at the University of Leiden , where he had already enrolled on April 3, 1867. It was here that Carel Gabriel Cobet and Willem Georg Pluijgers (born February 18, 1812 in Zwolle, † April 30, 1880 in Leiden) were his teachers. From 1875 he was a teacher of Greek at the grammar school in Amsterdam and received his doctorate on April 1, 1876 in Leiden in classical literature on the subject of De Aristophane Euripides censore .

On August 17, 1884, he was appointed professor of the Greek language, literature and history of Greek art at the University of Leiden, which task he took up on October 1 with the introductory speech De arte discendi . On April 27, 1890 he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences , was a member of the Greek Academy and was knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion . He also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1904/05 . On December 18, 1914, he resigned his professorship and was retired on January 1, 1915. He spent the last years of his life in Switzerland.
